WINTER RETREATS |
We will explore the fields and woods on foot using homemade toboggans and snowshoes. Learn of the comforts of natural winter clothes made from wool, hide and fur. You will see how mukluks fit into a traditional snowshoe binding and learn to set up a comfortable winter camp consisting of heated wall tents with balsam fir bough floors. We will make winter shelters that can be slept in without a sleeping bag, and learn to read the ice for safe travel. Northern peoples have lived and thrived for generations using these techniques. The frozen north is abundant with life once you know where to look. We will be studying the habits of moose, deer, rabbit, beaver, muskrat, otter, mink, martin, weasel, squirrel, birds and all who present themselves. On stormy days, we make winter tools, share some stories and talk with Ray discussing how the "native mind" works in relationship to Earth in our modern world. By the retreats end you will have some basic skills on how to live safely and comfortable in the beauty and bounty of winter. Our intention is to sharpen your ability to see the world along with giving you skills that may guide you through life. Call for more information 207.426.8138 |
