CANOE TRIPS

Poland Pond Canoe Trip

Welcome to the land of peace and solitude... for the seeker of beauty and the curious at heart... where one can observe bald eagles and osprey soaring to the calls of loons, deer and their young feeding along the lakeshore, and moose wading through still water as the sun sets behind nearby hills. Come and explore the old growth pine trees and floating bogs; canoe to neighboring islands; learn to pole up Wadley Stream; hike Allagash Mountain for panoramic views of the north country and her surrounding bodies of water; relax at the cozy island camp; swim and much more. This is a trip for the active and contemplative alike. You will leave with a true taste of the remote North Maine Woods and a longing to return for more! Call for dates 207.426.8138

Poland Pond, Maine Moose and Ray

Allagash Canoe Trip

Be sure you have plenty of film for your camera because you wouldn't want to miss a good shot of an eagle flying overhead or a majestic moose feeding in the lake. This trip usually starts at Umsaskis Lake. Ray will teach you paddling techniques, how to read the water and understand the river. This provides not only a world class learning experience, but also helps you take the most enjoyment from your time in the wilderness.Poling on the river.

You will see osprey, eagles, loons, moose, deer, otters, and many other species of wildlife. You will want to be prepared to take pictures as you canoe down the river. If you fish, you may put a line in at any time along the way. There will also be plenty of opportunities to go swimming at each camp site.

Canoers will maneuver more of the Allagash River, including light ripples and some Class I and II waters, up to Round Pond. Depending on progress, camp will be pitched on Round Pond or on Croque Brook. There is usually a side trip 'moose watch' here, paddling about in the canoe looking for moose grazing the river banks.

From here on out the river will provide a true test of canoeing skills. The Allagash winds continuously back and forth through sandbars and rocks. Ray will be happy to teach poling techniques. We will camp down around Dead Water North.

From there, the group travels down river to Michaud Farms to check out with the ranger. You'll continue canoeing to the old Taylor place where we may have a lay over day for hiking and exploring. Then we will continue on to Allagash Falls (providing there is enough water), and then portage gear around the falls before a light lunch. The route continues down to Big Brook or East Twin Brook for the last night on the river. The trip concludes at Allagash Village early the next morning. We will have a hot lunch in Allagash village before we head home. Call for dates 207.426.8138
